YM’s late rally not enough

-

East Kilbride YM produced a late fight back at Milngavie Wanderers but it proved too little, too late as they dropped precious points in the Caledonian League title race.

The hangover from last week’s Scottish Cup exit to Dumbarton St Pat’s was evident as they went 3-0 down, but Milngavie were made to sweat after two late goals from Cammy McCulloch and John Griffen.

Milngavie took an early lead from a well-placed free-kick, and YM had the chance to equalise almost immediately, but Ryan Kelly’s goal-bound effort deflected off the goalkeeper’s chest and over the bar.

The hosts doubled their lead midway through the half with a spectacular 20-yard volley that goes down as a real contender for goal of the month.

YM’s response was for Craig Tocher to put Mikey Carroll through but once again the keeper pushed the shot over the bar.

Changes were made early in the second half, but YM’s woes continued when Milngavie scored yet another spectacular goal to take the wind out of their sails.

Nearing the end McCulloch did find the net after being set up by Tocher and in the last minute Griffen bulleted home Connor McCann’s cross.

Meanwhile, YM’s GGPL side kept up their promotion hopes with a thumping 6-1 victory over Westerlands.

Anthony Penman starred in the rout scoring four goals with Ross Anderson and Josh Cairns also on target.
