Will Oxfam scandal put you off donating?
News readers say charities need support
With Oxfam immersed in scandal following allegations that aid staff working in Haiti hired prostitutes following an earthquake in 2010, the charity has revealed that donations have dropped.
The UK Government have warned Oxfam that funding through the East Kilbride-based Department for International Development is at risk unless it can meet the “high standards” required.
The Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund (SCIAF) has also confirmed it has dealt with two cases of alleged sexual misconduct involving children.
The News spoke to folk in East Kilbride and asked whether the recent revelations would make them think twice about giving to charity.
William Kane from St Leonards said: “It wouldn’t stop me at all although maybe more controls should be in place.”
Jim Scott from West Mains said: “It does make you think and charities may need to look at more rigorous checks – but I wouldn’t like to think it would stop me completely.”
Meanwhile, Jeanette Robertson from Westwood said: “I would still give to charity as they still need the support.”
And John Downie from St Leonards added: “I would still give.
“On the whole charities do such a good job and shouldn’t be hindered by the actions of a few who cross the line.”
