OAP, 92 targeted in scam

Bogus callers hunted

- Andrea O’Neill

Callous rogue traders targeted a vulnerable 92-year-old at her Calderwood home.

Police are investigating an incident in Stobo where bogus workmen carried out unnecessary work on the property then tried to con the pensioner out of £5000.

The bill for gutter cleaning and UPVC facias was then reduced to £1300.

When challenged by a neighbour at the victim’s request, the men made off.

The incident happened at 1pm on Friday.

Enquiries into the attempted fraud are ongoing.

Inspector Aidan Higgins is warning East Kilbride householders to be extra vigilant.

He said: “Please be on your guard regarding workmen and cold callers offering to do work on your property.

“Often the work is not required and the price is excessive. The best advice is to decline and report any suspicious activity to police.”

East Kilbride East councillor Jim Wardhaugh slammed the con artists, saying: “These people are despicable. I can’t understand them.

“The only way they can be stopped is if people are aware of them operating.

“People must look after each other and report suspicious activity.

“If you know someone who is vulnerable and see supposed workmen loitering about, warn your neighbours.”

If anyone has any information about this incident or wants to report suspicious activity in their area, contact police on 101.

Alternatively, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be given anonymously.
