First class effort over post office Bid to restore vital service
A Strathaven councillor is confident a resolution will be found which will lead to the reopening of the town’s troubled post office.
Months of uncertainty came to a head recently when the Green Street branch in the DayToday store closed its doors.
This follows on from Strathaven Community Council raising issues at their last meeting regarding “erratic opening hours” and marked another blow for the town following the announcement that the axe would fall on the RBS in the Common Green.
However, Avondale and Stonehouse Tory councillor Graeme Campbell insists work is going on behind the scenes to ensure the shutters are pulled up as soon as possible.
“I’ve been fully aware of what’s been going on regarding Strathaven Post Office for many months,” said Cllr Campbell.
“The bottom line – the service this community has received from the post office for some time now has been very poor.
“The constant closures and inconsistent opening times have been frustrating and quite frankly unacceptable.
“I have informally been working in the background and I have been assured that measures are being taken to re-open the post office as soon as possible. From what I am hearing it looks promising.”
Strathaven MP Lisa Cameron added: “I have written to request a meeting with Post Office Counters to discuss a pragmatic way forward for Strathaven Post Office. I also met with RBS Management last week to highlight the issues we are having locally with the post office – which has been badged by RBS as the solution to closing our bank.”
A Post Office spokesperson declined to put a date on when the facility would be open again and said: “Strathaven Post Office has temporarily closed due to circumstances beyond Post Office control.
“We are sorry for the inconvenience this may cause and we would like to reassure customers that we are working hard to restore the service to the community as soon as possible and are committed to maintaining services in the area.”
