Four Nations success for EK club members
Superb medal haul for town’sYouth Disability squad
Nine players from East Kilbride Youth Disability Sports Club (EKYDSC) enjoyed notable success at last week’s 2018 Scottish Four Nations Para Badminton Championships.
Organised by Badminton Scotland, the annual event attracted players from across Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales to battle it out for medals at the Scotstoun Sports Campus in Glasgow.
Over three highly competitive days, the athletes from EKYDSC racked up an impressive haul of seven medals.
Diane Gillan – fresh from securing a gold medal double at the Scottish Disability Championships – was in top form as she won a gold medal in the mixed doubles (division one) and went on to claim a silver medal in the women’s doubles (division two).
Two silver medals were claimed by Ross McCann as he claimed a runnersup berth in the men’s doubles (division three) and the mixed doubles (division four), respectively.
There was further success as Hazel Irvine won silver in the women’s singles (division three) and Mark Richardson and Catherine Budge teamed up to win silver in the mixed doubles (division five).
Other club members who competed at the event were Ross McQuilken, Stacey Reid, Craig Docherty and Colin Nicholson.
Club chair Len Richardson said: “We are all very proud of what all nine club members have achieved at this major championships, some of them competing for the first time ever in an organised tournament.
“They have all worked hard to reach the standards required to compete at this level and they have all confirmed how much they enjoyed the experience, meeting and competing with people from all over the UK.”
EKYDSC is a voluntary organisation promoting participation in sports and recreational activities for people with special needs.
They meet on Saturdays 11.30am to 1.30pm at Universal Connections in East Kilbride. A dedicated badminton session is also held on Sundays 10am11.30am at Stewartfield Community Centre.
