Councillor in blast

- Mark Pirie

An East Kilbride councillor has called for a crackdown on littering.

Broken bottles were among the items spotted around the Murray Square in recent weeks and Central South representative Collette Stevenson wants those responsible to clean up their act.

Local residents got in touch with the News to raise concerns about a number of glass Buckfast bottles smashed at the Murray recreation area – which is used by young people and community groups.

Cllr Stevenson also flagged up similar complaints from residents at Westwood Square and said she would get in touch with her South Lanarkshire Council colleagues regarding the issues.

“It’s an ongoing problem,” she told the News. “There has been a lot of rubbish dumped around the Murray Square – whether it is glass bottles, fly-tipping or dog dirt.

“It’s not just been in The Murray; similar problems have been happening in Westwood Square and the community council have also been trying to tackle it.

“I’m all for some form of crackdown on this. It’s about educating people on what damage litter can cause.

“It’s a health-and-safety concern that we will hopefully be able to tackle more once the snow has cleared.”

East Kilbride Central South ward colleague, Labour’s Gerry Convery, urged people to flag up problems and not put up with eyesore areas.

He said: “This is something we can look into.

“Like all councils, we don’t have the resources to have someone out there 24-7 but when someone calls in we will certainly get someone to come out and clear the area.

“I have heard that woodland areas have been littered by flytipping but if it’s on our radar we get it cleaned up.

“We hold surgeries to try and identify these problems.”
