Should more be done to stop hoax callers? Cops reveal rise during snow chaos

- Mark Pirie

Despite emergency services being stretched to the limit as the Beast from the East swept across Lanarkshire, police reported a rise in the number of hoax calls.

With the shocking news revealed by cops last week, we took to the streets to get locals’ reactions.

John Wright from West Mains said: “It is shocking that people would even think about doing this.

“Services are under enough pressure as it is – never mind adding even more to their workload when the weather is as bad as it was last week. “Something should be done to stop this.” Nina Balarsky of the Village felt there should be a renewed effort made to catch people who make the calls. “It’s terrible,” she said. “I don’t know why someone would think that is okay. It would be good if the police could catch them.”

Mark Balarsky added: “There is enough pressure on doctors, ambulances and police. It’s not fair.”

Fraser MacKintosh of Greenhills called for a financial penalty to be introduced to help crack down on fake phone calls.

“It’s terrible that people can get away with it,” he said. “You always hear about young kids doing it as a joke but the weather was so bad I don’t understand why someone would do it.

“A fine or something like that should be given to people who do it.”
