Takeaway is handed £80k facelift money
080218hoowah_1 A Strathaven takeaway has been awarded a grant of more than £80,000 for an external facelift.
The Hoo Wah Cantonese and Peking restaurant, on Green Street, applied for funding through the Strathaven Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS).
It is operated and funded by Historic Environmental Scotland, which awarded South Lanarkshire Council £625,000 to undertake a regeneration scheme in the Strathaven Conservation Area in 2015.
The CARS project is delivered through a partnership between the council and community representatives drawn from Avondale Civic Society, Strathaven Community Council, Strathaven Business Association and the Rotary Club of Strathaven.
Grants of more than £20,000 must be approved by the authority’s community and enterprise resources committee – with councillors rubber-stamping the request at a meeting last week.
The work on the takeaway includes the re-roofing of the property, stone repairs and new dormers, rainwater goods, leadwork and flashings, and shop signage.
The total cost of the project is estimated at up to £103,573. CARS will contribute an award of £82,858, with the takeaway owner stumping up the remaining £20,714.
Work on the building is scheduled to take place this summer. fire risk and can be a danger to animals, as can the mass release of helium balloons, if they land in grazing fields or somewhere animals can attempt to eat them or become entangled.
“The fire risk associated with the release of lanterns extends beyond farm buildings and crops. It is not just a rural problem, with all buildings at risk, examples include the recycling plant blaze in the Midlands and a caravan park in Worcestershire, both attributed to lanterns.
“By prohibiting the use of helium-filled balloons and sky lanterns at council events, the council would be leading by example, and avoiding the potential hazards of releasing balloons and lanterns into the sky.
“The council would also prohibit their use by third parties on any council land leased, hired or let, therefore, furthering the protection of the local environment.”
The committee progressed the report, which will now go before the executive committee for further approval before the policy is published.
