Looking back on childhood memories

- Nicola Findlay

Youngsters throughout East Kilbride and Avondale have transformed into wizards, witches and superheroes for World Book Day.

Last week’s News featured local schools’ celebrations – which even the Beast from the East couldn’t cancel.

And this week there are pictures of kids at Chapelton Primary celebrating all things literary.

The News took to East Kilbride town centre to speak to folk about their memories of their favourite childhood book or character.

Elspeth Dunne from Strathaven said: “I used to love Little Red Riding Hood and that’s actually what my little girl dressed up as at school for World Book Day. She also loves all the Disney characters.”

Meanwhile, George Murray from Greenhills said: “I was really into Desperate Dan comics – and everyone says I am like him anyway!”

And his wife Lynda has fond memories of recreating a favourite of many children with her sister.

“I read the Famous Five books by Enid Blyton and liked them because they were always going on adventures and getting into mischief,” she said.

Jacqueline Learmonth from Strathaven added: “I was horse-daft growing up and through my teenage years so I loved anything about horses like Black Beauty.”

I read the Famous Five books. They were always going on adventures...
