Businesses are hit in overnight raids

- Andrea O’Neill

Ten more East Kilbride businesses have been targeted by thieves in overnight raids.

Commercial premises in the Murray Square, Calderwood Square and Carron Place in the Kelvin Industrial Estate were hit between Friday, March 9 and Monday, March 12.

This brings the total number of businesses in the area affected to 22.

Police would not provide further details at this stage in their investigation – but confirmed they are following a positive line of enquiry.

News of the latest raids come just one week after 12 businesses in the Village, Murray Square, and College Milton and Kelvin industrial estates were broken into during a mini-crimewave over a five-day period.

The culprits made off with hundreds of pounds in cash from store tills and charity tins. Stock, office equipment and valuables worth thousands of pounds were also stolen.

Police have increased patrols across the town and are appealing to business owners to tighten security measures to protect their property.

Inspector Aidan Higgins told the News:“Over the last couple of weeks there has been an increase in the reported housebreakings to commercial premises within East Kilbride.

“An ongoing police enquiry by the local problem solving team is following a positive line of enquiry. With the assistance of the local community we will reduce the reoccurrence of such inquisitive crimes and look to detect those responsible.”
