Bin row causes a real stink

Residents left raging

- Nicola Findlay

Frustrated Murray residents have hit out – and claim that wheelie bins are left lying on the street instead of being emptied.

A number of people of Hill View say they have been battling with South Lanarkshire Council for nearly a year to have bins uplifted on the days they are put out.

The council have pointed to access to the area being an issue.

John Irons told how bins can be left lying for over a week – and only after several calls to the local authority are they emptied.

“It’s just ridiculous that we constantly have a battle on our hands just to get our bins emptied,” he said.

“It has being going on for nearly a year now and myself and my neighbours are never done being on the phone to the council.”

He went on: “We keep getting told it’s because the bin lorries can’t get past parked cars but then after a number of calls all of a sudden they can.

“It shouldn’t take us constantly having to pester them to get out bins emptied. We are all sick of it.

“If the general waste bins are left lying – especially coming into summer – it is an environmental hazard.”

Gordon Mackay, the council’s head of roads and transportation services, said: “We can advise that parking attendant patrols have been increased at Hill View.

“We will continue with patrols to ensure that the access is not obstructed.

“However, some responsibility must remain with drivers when choosing where to park.

“Our refuse collection vehicles have had much better access over the last couple of weeks and collections have taken place on the scheduled day.”
