An East Kilbride councillor has called for a crackdown on fly-tipping after a Murray street was targeted again.

East Kilbride Central South councillor Gerry Convery blasted the dumpers and urged them to clean up their act.

A resident told the News slates and tiles from roof work on Telford Road has been abandoned for over two months, and bedding plastic stuck in trees.

Now the Labour councillor wants to catch those who left the waste.

“It’s not something anyone would like to see,” Cllr Convery told the News.

“The council offers a free uplift service - so there is absolutely no excuse for it.

“We live in a throwaway culture and these people don’t seem to give one damn about the society we live in.

“Of course I would like to see a crackdown. I cover a big area, and from time to time people raise issues, but if people don’t report it we don’t know it’s there.

“It’s not a thing I hear about regularly, but if people pick up the phone or come to one of the regular surgeries I will take it up with the council, or if someone saw who it was we would chap their door.

“It’s an on-going issue but I’d like folk to buy into it and clean up the town.

“We can do as much as we can though and selfish people will still do it.

“You don’t get this in other countries. I used to live in Canada and you never saw it.”

SNP councillor for the area, John Anderson, noted that there had been no reports submitted to South Lanarkshire Council regarding Telford Road.

However, he agreed that fly-tipping had a negative impact on the town.

He said: “I am acutely aware of the impact the selfish actions of fly-tippers has on our community and that is why the council take the issue very seriously.

“I keep a close eye on the streets in my ward and I’m aware of some historic issues on Telford Road, but there are no reports of flytipping in the last 30 days.

“It is a busy and wellpopulated street so we do deal with a lot of bulk uplift requests in the area. It may be that on occasions these are being mistaken for flytipping.

“Under further investigation I have found that in the last three months there has been one report of fly-tipping in Telford Road. However, even one incident is too many, and so I would urge residents to let the council know whenever it occurs.

“Illegal dumping can be reported in confidence to Environmental Health 0303 123 1015 or via the Council Web site www.
