20 SCHOOLS Musical high for CWE band

-

Pupils at Calderglen High hit the right notes and clinched a top award as part of a multi award-winning band.

A number of pupils in the Clyde Wind Ensemble (CWE) took part in the Scottish Regional qualification heats of the prestigious National Concert Band Festival (NCBF).

The festival was held in Garnock Community Campus and CWE were awarded the highest possible accolade of a Platinum.

CWE are a local community band, formed in 2009 and based in Calderglen High School.

They are under the musical direction of Diane McCrory, a music teacher at the school, who last year earned a scholarship to the Midwest Festival in Chicago to enhance her conducting experience, an event which has benefited the band greatly.

The band played three pieces on the day: The Last Centaur by Rossano Galante, Fantasy on a Japanese Folk Song by Samuel Hazo and Skyrider by Paul Hart.

The band are also competing in the Scottish Concert Band Festival in Perth in March where they have been presented with the prestigious honour of closing the event.

This will result in a challenging day for Calderglen pupils – brother and sister duo Ross and Katie Abernethy, Mellissa Foster, Ellie Stewart and Lewis Mckay who all play in both bands – no mean feat for musicians of such a young age.

Anyone who is interested in joining is more than welcome to contact the band through Facebook, twitter or email clydewindensemble@live.co.uk.
