U18s top off a slew of successes for the youth teams

- Richard Beaton

Youngsters from East Kilbride Rugby Club enjoyed a series of impressive results last week with the under-18s marching into the final of the West Plate competition.

The under-18s were the stars of the show as the Torrance House club also celebrated victories at primary school level.

Last Saturday, EK’s teenage outfit beat Cambuslang 34-10 at Coats Park to book their place in the final against Kilmarnock, cuurently scheduled for April 21.

The Brown twins, Matthew and Lewis, split four tries between them while Harry Taggart and Euan Ferrie also crossed.

As the bulk of the side hit the showers, first XV coach Allan Steel was on hand to re-direct Connor Wilson and Ethan Aitken to the bench for the senior side.

Meanwhile, East Kilbride Rugby Club junior sides also managed to get games at the weekend, albeit still not a full complement.

As always, results do not matter at the younger age-grades and two sides in particular were noteworthy for getting incredible numbers on the field.

Firstly, Ross McQueen was able to put out teams at P1, P2 and P3 last Sunday when Cumnock turned up at the Torrance House Arena.

Given that at season’s start there was one team covering all three school years this is quite some achievement. To make everyone’s day better EK came out on top at P1 and P2 levels, with the Ayrshire side shading it at P3.

Another success story came from the primary six group who gave game time to over 20 boys and girls, although it was Cumnock this time who took the contest two rubbers to one.

Star man for EK was Zach Meechan, the award given for his shuddering tackling, while Michael Calderwood was the best attacker on show from either side.

There was no senior action this week, but the first XV return to the field on Saturday when they host Garnock.

Kick-off is 3pm.
