Leaks fixed in time for Easter
What a difference a few weeks make.
The News reported in February how the congregation at tiny St Columba Lutheran Church in East Kilbride faced a roof repair bill amounting to thousands of pounds.
But volunteers at the Westwood Hill church found the cash – with all of the improvements carried out in time for Easter.
Church leadership team member Linda White told the News:“I want to thank the community for their support and all the positive messages.”
Volunteers at St Columba Lutheran Church were delighted as they opened their doors for Easter celebrations after thousands of pounds of repairs.
Water had been pouring through the sloping roof in the main hall, which has stood in Westwood Hill for six decades, following heavy rain and snow throughout the winter months.
This led to costly damage to the pews and ruined the wooden panels in the church, as well as allowing a puddle of water to form.
They previously had to spend £6000 on roof repairs. However, the problems returned due to the angled design of the roof.
The issues had caused added strain for the church as parishioners expected a packed schedule while celebrating 500 years since the Reformation and the annual Easter celebrations.
However, after spending a further £8000 the roof has been repaired.
Within the cost, the leadership team at the church – which has a small congregation of around 10 people – also decided to re-roughcast the buding.
Buckets and towels which visitors had been accustomed to spotting dotted around the building have now been cleared and Linda White, who is a member of the church leadership team, reported that they have had no more problems.
Even with the return of high winds, snow and rain last week the roof stood firm.
Linda noted that they have received positive comments from locals after the News covered their struggles.
And she is hoping to build on the good feeling to recruit new members to use their hall.
She told the News: “I want to thank the community for their support and all the positive messages.
“Today, there is no water coming in. It’s holding up really well to all the weathers you get in East Kilbride.
“Our hall is free on most nights and anybody who is wanting to get in touch to find out more can give us a call.”
