Teams are wanted

- Nicola Findlay

Organisers of Scotland’s longest-running Relay for Life are appealing for bighearted fundraisers to get on their marks.

Teams will set up camp beside the track at East Kilbride’s John Wright Sports Centre on Friday, June 15 for the inspirational overnight event which raises cash for Cancer Research UK (CRUK).

Fundraisers will take turns to walk around the track for 24 hours to signify the fact that cancer never sleeps.

Entertainment, food and activities bring the event to life and allow a fantastic opportunity for fun, laughter, team building and community celebration.

Last year’s event raised an amazing £37,756 which will help CRUK fund the work of doctors, nurses and scientists who are dedicated to saving more lives.

This will be East Kilbride’s 21st Relay For Life, which makes it the longest-running relay in Scotland.

Previous teams have organised curry nights, sponsored walks, quiz nights and coffee mornings, amongst other things, and the teams who have already signed up are happy to share ideas that put the ‘fun’ in fundraising.

One of the regular teams ‘The Suepremes’ are taking part for the 11th year while the fancy dress competition on the Saturday afternoon is always popular.

One of the youngest members of The Suepremes, 14-year-old Robbie Bell, said: “I really enjoy all the stuff we do throughout the year to raise money for Cancer Research.

“My gran had cancer last year and I feel as if I am making a real difference to help people like her survive the disease.”
