older people by supporting them to stay in their own homes.”

Councillor John Bradley, chair of South Lanarkshire Council’s social work resources committee, said: “All too often being admitted to a residential home or hospital as a result of a short-term issue, such as ill health or a fall, results in an older person moving into long-term care not because of the original problem but as a result of a prolonged period of bed-based care.

“Our community care hubs will support more effective rehabilitation and reablement that will help people to return to living in their own home, where they want to be.”

Val de Souza, executive director of health and social care, said: “When people need a level of care that cannot be delivered at home the hubs will support short stay care geared towards recovery, rehabilitation and getting more people back home where they want to be.

“We have been testing this model since 2016 in three of our care homes and the results have been overwhelmingly positive; well over half of service users have been able to return to their own homes.” Waiting times at University Hospital Hairmyres A&E department increased for the second week in a row.

Latest statistics for the week ending Sunday, April 8 show that 84.1 per cent of patients were admitted, discharged, or transferred within the four-hour Scottish Government target time.

This is a drop from 87.2 per cent the previous week.

It is also below the NHS Lanarkshire average of 89.3 per cent and the NHS Scotland average of 87.6 per cent.

The government target is 95 per cent.

Twelve patients waited over eight hours – a drop from 24 the previous week but nobody waited more than 12 hours.

The figures also show that Hairmyres A&E performed below the health board’s other two acute sites.

At University Hospital Monklands in Airdrie, 94.1 per cent of patients were seen within four hours.

And at University Hospital Wishaw, 88.7 per cent of patients were seen in that time. A craft fayre will help boost the funds of a charity which helps struggling families in East Kilbride and beyond.

Sasoss (formerly Swap and Save One Stop Shop) will hold a craft fayre on June 23 in the Village Centre from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. For more info go to the Sasoss Facebook page.
