Early-morning raid

East Kilbride News online readers were shocked to learn of the gang who held a family captive in their own home in the town, before ransacking it.

Anne Weir-mcgregor said:“So glad everyone at home is safe.

“Hope the police catch whoever is responsibl­e for the awful crime.

“It’s dreadful to think you are not safe in your own home.

“Floodlight­ing, sensor alarms and a dog or some geese.”

Kirsty Lang said:“My God, this town is getting worse.”

Jo Duncan said:“Shocking. Hope the family are okay and the thugs get caught and locked up for a long time.”

Julie Cummiskey said:“East Kilbride is getting worse.”

Catching the firebugs

East Kilbride fire chief Eddie Kelly has warned that lives have been put at risk due to a spate of blazes during the Easter holidays. He said resources used mean someone in real danger may have to wait for help. Caz Paton shared a first-hand account of something she saw.

She said:“I caught a group of young boys and girls, ages roughly 12-14 years old, setting fire to the trees and grass at the back of the Dollan Baths. Had to phone the fire brigade to put the fire out before it spread any further.”

Big-hearted students
