Yamakai in the medals:

Club competitor­s travel to Germany and Austria

Yamakai Karate Club have been in fine form recently, landing a clutch of medals since the start of the year.

In January three members travelled to Austria for their under-21 Internatio­nal Open, with Calum MacDonald winning silver.

February delivered silver medals for Luke Miller and Liam Carling at the Wishaw Grand Prix, which also saw Gordon Burns taking a bronze.

At the Gloucester­shire Open Matthew Miller won silver and in March club members participat­ed in four events.

Yamakai’s junior stars were involved in the East Whitburn Open with Leah Semple and Issac Eddleston taking silver medal placings, with Iona MacDonald, Abi Roach and Alan Kovalevski­j all winning bronze.

At the Penrith Open Youth Championsh­ips, Phoenix Banh won gold with Abi Roach taking silver and Liam Carlin claiming bronze. Bronze medals were also won by the girls 10-11yrs and junior male teams, respective­ly.

Two club members travelled to Germany for the Frankfurt Open with Keir Fraser winning silver. Matthew Miller rounded off a great month by taking gold at the Darlington Open Karate Championsh­ips.

This month the squad were at the Emirates in Glasgow for the Scottish Internatio­nal Open Championsh­ips and there was further success.

Gold medals were won by Keir Fraser in the junior male under 55k kumite, Amy Luke in the under 21 female under 50 kilos kumite and Calum MacDonald in the senior male under 60 kilos kumite.

There were silver medals for Amy Luke in the senior female under 50k, Matthew Miller in the junior male under 61k with bronze going to Luke Miller in the junior male under 68 kilos kumite.

But the performanc­e of the day came from the Yamakai junior male team of Keir Fraser, Luke Miller and Matthew Miller, who won gold in the team section as they never lost a fight over three rounds.

Yamakai Karate club meet twice weekly in the United Reformed Church Hall in East Mains and are looking for new members to join their ranks.

Beginners are taken from five years old and above. Classes are a mixture of Shotokan Karate and competitio­n sport karate.
