FINE LINES

Mark given parking penalty after appointment over runs

- Mark Pirie

An East Kilbride man has called for common sense when it comes to parking after receiving a fine due to an appointment with the nurse which took longer than expected.

Brassed-off Mark McCann parked outside the Hunter Health Centre and paid for a 30-minute stay – believing that he would only be in for a quick visit.

However, the Murray man was then advised to undergo tests for asthma – which he later found he had – meaning he was back around 25 minutes over his expiry time.

Mr McCann was unable to use the free parking facility as he drives a van.

Following the £60 fine, he wrote to South Lanarkshire Council to explain the situation but was told that he must pay up.

The Telford Road resident has now called for more understanding from the council, who have advised him of the appeals procedure.

“I understand that I shouldn’t have been late but I was in an appointment,” a furious Mr McCann told the News.

“I explained that to them but they seemed to think I could just up and leave or should have used the free parking complex.

“I told them I had a van and for the sake of 25 minutes I don’t think I should be fined.

“The doctors and nurses surely can vouch for people who have run over their time.

“It’s not about the money – it’s the principle of the thing.”

Mr McCann added: “It’s surely common sense. It makes you wonder how many other people end up getting fines.”

A spokeswoman for South Lanarkshire Council said that Mr McCann has the information he needs regarding appealing the parking charge notice.

“Mr McCann has been in touch with the parking unit and has been advised of the process should he want to formally appeal the PCN,” she said.
