Lifeline for Glassford thanks to top festival

Defibrillator bought

- Mark Pirie

The Glassford Community Group have bought a defibrillator for the village hall – with the money raised from the first-ever beer and gin festival.

March’s event brought in over £1000 and some of the funds have been spent on snapping up a defibrillator from the British Heart Foundation.

There will now be training on how to use the lifesaving device.

The addition comes as the community group have been in the early stages of talks with South Lanarkshire Council in the hope of purchasing the village hall itself.

Committee members have in the past successfully raised funds to secure a new play park for children in order to brighten up and enhance Glassford, through community events.

In the process, they raised a staggering £55,000 – and have set their sights on similar financial success with the hall.

Les Hoggan from the group believes that acquiring a defibrillator is another positive step in that process.

“Long-term the goal is to get ownership of the hall for the community,” he told the News.

“South Lanarkshire Council have been really supportive of what we are trying to do.

“We will now get training from the British Heart Foundation and some first responders.

“We’re glad that the festival can have another positive impact.”

Mr Hoggan was also delighted with the successful first run of the festival – and admits there are already plans in the pipeline to bring it back in 2019.

“We were quite happy with how it went and it’s another good community event for the village,” he said.

“It’s a great amount for a firstever event.

“We are thinking about doing it again in March next year.”
