40 YEARS AGO

East Kilbride took part in the Scottish heat of‘ It’s a knockout’ in Coatbridge – and the contest turned out to be as close as it was exciting as any seen in the long history of the competitio­n.

The teams from Monklands, East Kilbride and Clydebank had everything to go for. They were vying to represent Britain in the internatio­nal series in France and take part in the British final in England.

Hypnotists were going to have to cast their spells outside East Kilbride if action was taken by the district council’s law committee as it was recommende­d that hypnotist acts should be banned from appearing in the town as there were concerns about problems arising from it.

30 YEARS AGO

East Kilbride appointed its first female Labour provost when a new council met for the first time.

The meeting rubber stamped the ruling Labour group’s selection of Councillor Helen Biggins as provost.

JVC’s new plant represente­d a “considerab­le boost” for EK and Scotland when it was opened by Scottish Secretary Malcolm Rifkind. The site in College Milton created 650 jobs.

20 YEARS AGO

Children were left “absolutely devastated” by a shock move to refuse them entry to their chosen school. A total of 16 kids who believed they would be attending Duncanrig Secondary were affected by the council’s cash-based decision.

Mitzi Gaynor was pleased to wash that man right out of her hair in South Pacific. But East Kilbride’s Annette Johnson was just glad to cleanse her locks. The mature student went 12 weeks without shampooing to raise £360 for the Yorkhill Scanner Appeal.
