Medal joy for cyclists:

Youngsters nab medals in Muirkirk races

- Paul Thomson

Six youngsters from East Kilbride Road Club were in the medals at Muirkirk as the club hosted the first youth race of the 2018 season recently.

Nearly 200 riders from across the country descended on the Kames Motorsport Circuit for the race, which is part of the Scottish and SC (West) Series.

The circuit promotes fast and exciting racing, so there was plenty for the large crowd of spectators to enjoy in the warm sunshine.

EKRC had a total of 17 riders in the top ten in their respective categories, with six taking home medals.

In the under-eight girls’ category, Millie Boothman crossed the line in first place for EK, while club-mate Eilidh Greenhalgh finished close behind in third place.

Kris Bryce collected a bronze medal in the under-14 boys section, just pipping fellow EKRC rider Finn McHendry in fourth.

Imani Pereira-James took home the under-14 girls title ahead of Morven Yeoman in second place.

And in the under-16 girls category Kirsty Hay completed a fine day of racing for the club with a bronze medal whilst recovering from a crash at the Youth Tour of Scotland.

EKRC coach and event organiser Gregor Yeoman said: “We have been using this as a racing venue for a number of years and the tight twists and turns make for tough, hard and fast racing.

“The young riders race in a variety of age groups with the club represented in them all. While some of our top riders put in their usual excellent performances I was really pleased to see some of our youngest riders competing very strongly and, in particular, Millie Boothman and Eilidh Greenhalgh getting first and third in the under-eight girls. Their performances show real potential for the future.”
