EKYM’s hopes fading

-

EKYM ............................. 1 Cambria ......................... 3

East Kilbride YM’s hopes of finishing in second spot were dealt a blow as league leaders Cambria snatched two late goals to secure victory.

The result means YM have slipped to fourth in Division 1B and sit four points adrift of second place Stenhousemuir, having played a game more.

It was clear early on it wasn’t going to be YM’s day.

From their first corner kick the ball looked to be going in at the far post but unfortunately it hit off a YM player and was cleared.

Another disaster struck YM moments later when an innocuous ball over the top caused a mix up between keeper and defender, allowing the Cambria forward the simple task of putting the ball into an empty net.

YM’s Stuart Gordon then went off injured to add to their woes but even then fate turned against YM when Cammy McCulloch hobbled off injured.

Despite the traumatic start for the hosts, both sides created chances but they were unable to find the net.

YM equalised early in the second half after Mikey Carroll had been impeded just outside the area and Craig Fry stepped up to fire an excellent free kick high into the net to level things.

However, with YM looking set for a point Cambria netted twice in the final moments to claim the win.

YM were also in action in the Presidents Cup on Saturday, drawing 0-0 with Larkhall Thistle.

Both teams’ hectic end of season schedule was in evidence as neither side could find a way to goal.

The result favoured YM slightly as they have a goal difference of seven compared to Larkhall’s one, with both teams to play Balmore Amateurs.

YM are not in league action again until Wednesday, May 23 when they travel to Rhu Amateurs.
