Is there a way back for EK town centre M&s?

- Colin Paterson

Hello and welcome to this week’s edition of the East Kilbride News.

It’s back to normal for most folk across East Kilbride and Avondale after the very sunny bank holiday weekend.

And I’m sure the kids at schools throughout the town and district are keeping their fingers crossed that we haven’t ‘had our summer’.

They won’t be the only ones hoping for better days.

We have more coverage of retail giant Marks & Spencer’s announcement that they are proposing to close their East Kilbride town centre store on pages 4 and 5 of today’s paper.

It’s fair to say the news has come as a massive shock to people – indeed, one lady called the newsdesk last Tuesday afternoon to ask if it was really true.

Can anything be done to save the store? People are doing their bit and a petition has been launched.

But it is going to be a tough task, particularly when the company announced a sharp drop in pre-tax profits in the last financial year.

Ironically, store closure costs were listed among the reasons as M&S sought to explain its financial performance.

We await their next move with interest, as will the 67 staff whose jobs are on the line – uncertainty only makes a bad situation worse.

Elsewhere in the paper, you can collect token two which will allow you to claim two ‘ride all day’ wristbands worth £35 for M&Ds.

As mentioned earlier, it is almost the end of the school year and our centre spread features some fantastic pictures from St Andrew’s and St Bride’s High’s S6 Prom. Looks like everyone got glammed up and had a good time.

There is plenty going on this weekend – enjoy whatever it is you’re up to.
