10 LAUNCH New charity will help open doors for pupils
Support is needed
A new charity which aims to improve opportunities for young people with additional support needs, as well as their families, is being launched.
The Friends of Sanderson aim to advance education and to improve the health and wellbeing of pupils, former pupils, family members and carers of pupils of Sanderson High School.
It also intends to generate funds for residential experiences and other projects that will provide opportunities for pupils to play, learn, make friends and dream big in terms of their future.
To mark the launch of the charity, a party will be held on June 7 at 7.30pm at the school’s annual barbecue and the committee are keen to see businesses and the local community join them and become ‘Friends of Sanderson’.
The school in its current form came into being in 1994 and the name was chosen to mark the work of campaigners Ethel and David Sanderson.
Chair of Friends of Sanderson, Randle Wilson, who has links with the school as managing director of East Kilbride-based The Furnishing Service, said: “We believe that children who have additional support needs deserve the same opportunities in life as everyone else. To make life simple we have created a menu of sponsorship opportunities all of which will make a really positive difference to these exceptional young people’s lives.”
Head teacher at Sanderson High, Aisling Boyle, added: “We can make a difference to our young people’s learning and qualifications in school but the charity is about taking this a step further, removing barriers and providing equality for our children, their families and helping the wider community.”
