End of an era as hall is closed

Ballgreen building

- Mark Pirie

It’s the end of an era after Strathaven’s Ballgreen Hall closed its doors for the final time.

The building has stood in Strathaven since 1968 – but is being replaced by the Avondale Community Wing which is joined with the new St Patrick’s Primary School.

The library shut down earlier this month so staff could move stock and equipment over to the new facility which opened to the public yesterday.

It consists of four separate areas which can be booked individually as smaller spaces, or joined together as larger spaces, depending on need.

The new library has a seating area where customers can enjoy a book over tea and coffee; a dedicated children’s area, and wifi.

Strathaven Community Council chair Aileen McMann admitted it was time to move forward.

“The Ballgreen Hall has been an asset to the town but the Avondale Community Hall is a beautiful and well-thought out replacement,” she told the News.

“I remember when the Ballgreen Hall was opened in Strathaven and this new facility is just a different class.

“It can only be good for the groups who use the Ballgreen Hall to get a brand new facility.”

East Kilbride West councillor David Watson, chair of South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture, added: “People will be delighted with the new community facility – the spaces have been designed to a high specification and offer flexibility for multi-purpose use.

“We now have a library fit for the 21st century.”
