Crowning glory as thousands flock to celebrate traditions and enjoy the events

- Colin Paterson

After a great festival week, Strathaven celebrated the town’s 2018 Gala Day on Saturday with thousands of people lining the streets for the parade and crowning of this year’s Gala Queen.

‘The Greatest Showman’, Knitting Ninjas, wizards from the world of Harry Potter, animals galore and more were just some of the highlights of the parade leading the car carrying 2018 Gala Queen Heather Waddell and her champion Oliver Franklin to the crowning ceremony at the bandstand.

And Heather said: “It was absolutely fantastic but it flew by so quickly. I wish I could go back and do it again.

“The weather was stunning and made it all so much more enjoyable.”

Gala Day was the culmination of a hugely successful week which included well over 1000 ducks making their way down the river in the park for the duck race and a record entry of juniors and seniors for the Crags Race.
