FRESH RETAIL BLOW

Poundworldagony

- Nicola Findlay

East Kilbride could face yet another jobs blow after Poundworld plunged into administration.

The discounter has a store in Princes Square which is one of 355 outlets across the country employing more than 5000 people.

Administrators Deloitte say stores will continue to trade as normal despite talks with with a potential buyer, R Capital, collapsing.

They say there are no planned redundancies or store closures at this time.

The announcement is the latest in a number of highprofile hits to retail in the town with 67 jobs on the line at Marks & Spencer.

A spokesman for EK, East Kilbride, said: “We are currently looking to get clarification on the situation but this is clearly a concerning development for all those working at Poundworld stores across the country. Unfortunately this is yet another example of the very difficult conditions facing retailers across the UK at present.”

Dave Gill, from trade union Usdaw, said: “Poundworld staff are deeply concerned about their jobs after the company failed to secure a rescue package. We are seeking urgent talks with the administrators.”

Clare Boardman, joint administrator, said: “Poundworld has been seeking to restructure its business.

“Unfortunately this has not been possible.

“We still believe a buyer can be found for the business or at least part of it and we are keeping staff appraised of developments as they happen. We thank all employees for their support at this difficult time.”
