Legends and Locals play in tribute to Lee

Old Firm stars turn out for cancer fundraiser

- Andrea O’Neill

Old Firm legends will be taking to the field for a charity match in memory of East Kilbride boy Lee Jamieson.

The fourth-annual Celtic and Rangers Legends and Locals game kicks off at the Showpark on Saturday, June 23 at 2pm.

The star-studded lineup will feature Old Firm favourites Simon Donnelly and Barry Ferguson, who promoted the event outside Celtic Park alongside the Live it for Lee charity’s new branded jeep.

The charity foundation was formed following the death of 12-year-old Lee who tragically lost his nine-month battle with leukaemia in August 2014.

Lee’s mum Elizabeth-Ann and dad Stephen set up Live it for Lee in his memory.

And the former Murray Primary School pupil’s family, friends and supporters have made it their mission to raise as much money as possible to fund leukaemia and lymphoma research to help find a cure.

A whopping £125,000 has been raised so far in aid of cancer research charity Bloodwise.

Sainsbury’s Kingsgate helped add to the pot last year after selecting the cause as their charity partner.

And now the Bank of Scotland East Kilbride have partnered up with Live it for Lee for 2018.

Celtic greats Donnelly, Jackie McNamara, Mark Burchill and Mark Wilson and Rangers legends Ferguson, Charlie Miller, Bob Malcolm and Hugh Burns are confirmed to play at the 2500-capacity park – with more star players still to be announced.

Lee’s dad Stephen told the News: “This is now our fourth year running events all year to raise money for Bloodwise.

“However we couldn’t have raised over £125,000 without the help from our friends and family and of course to all the people who come along to our events.

“A lot of companies and businesses in East Kilbride have contributed donations and time and to them we owe a huge thank you.

“East Kilbride Thistle Football club, last year and this year, have ‘Live It For Lee’ on their strips and have been fantastic at supporting us throughout. East Kilbride Community Trust have also been fantastic at supporting us.

“We hope to continue to raise awareness and funds in Lee’s name to keep his memory alive and to help save lives in the future by continuing to raise money for Bloodwise to help their research into leukaemia.”

Stephen added: “Last year Rangers won and the previous two years before that Celtic won so Rangers will be trying very hard to level it this year!”

In a special tribute, Lee’s former teammates at EK Caledonian Thistle Football Club will kick off the kids’ tournament from 11.30am before the big game at 2pm.

There will be a host of fun attractions on the day including a pipe band performance and a display by the Scottish Rockettes cheerleaders.

Face painting and balloon making will also keep the kids entertained and there will be a snack bar for refreshments.

Tickets for the Celtic and Rangers Legends and Locals charity match cost £5. Underfives go free.

Contact Stephen on 07931 665632 or pay at the gate but please note that tickets are limited.
