Campaign for breathing space

- Sian Maher

East Kilbride councillor John Anderson has given his backing to South Lanarkshire Council’s clean air initiative.

The local authority has launched a campaign to encourage folk to play their part in reducing air pollution.

Whirlies roundabout is one of three areas in South Lanarkshire where levels of pollution exceed national guidelines, mainly due to road traffic.

The other two areas are Rutherglen and Lanark town centres.

Councillor Anderson, who is chair of community and enterprise resources and represents East Kilbride Central South, said: “Clean air is important to us all for our good health and wellbeing.

“That is why it matters that we each play our part in protecting and improving the quality of the air that we breathe.

“There are lots of steps we can take and if everyone contributes and makes these small but important changes it will make a big difference to our environment.”

Messages urging people to play a part in the campaign are going out across the week on billboards, buses, social media and in newspapers.

The environmental services team has also produced a ‘story map’ accessible through all of the council’s digital platforms.

Numerous local projects have been carried out across South Lanarkshire to contribute to the cause.

St Andrew’s and St Bride’s High School pupils took part in a number of travel planning workshops which looked at reducing fuel emissions.
