40 YEARS AGO

Seven-month-old Angeline McGuire and proud mum Christine, from Greenhills, couldn’t help but smile after the baby was chosen as overall winner – and bonniest baby – at the Grand Baby Show.

Christine was surprised enough when Angeline took first place in the six-to-12 months category but couldn’t believe it when she came out on top. They were presented with a gift voucher.

When Kevin Bolan and Barbara Dunn of East Kilbride were chosen to take part in the Scottish Youth Theatre’s summer school they couldn’t believe their luck.

More than 500 teens auditioned for 60 places at the school in Edinburgh where youngsters worked with profession­al actors.

Two major firms were set to confirm they were going to bid for the National Engineerin­g Laboratory. British HydroMecha­nics Research Associatio­n from Bedfordshi­re and the Production Engineerin­g Research Associatio­n showed interest.

A little bit of EK Glasnost reached Russia, for Margaret Bateman, chair of an epilepsy group, wrote a letter to Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachov.

20 YEARS AGO

South Lanarkshir­e Council leader Tom McCabe blasted developers for delaying the giant Centre West retail complex. Constructi­on of the multi-million pound shopping centre wasn’t set to begin until Spring 1999. Cllr McCabe spoke at a meeting of the policy and resources committee, saying delays weren’t due to them.

Lisbon Lion Bertie Auld found himself at a bit of a loose end when he opened the fair at Greenhills Parish Church – for the Celtic legend forgot to bring his most famous trademark: a giant cigar.
