Tots dazzle at charity groove

Cash boost for baby research centres

- Nicola Findlay

Mums and their little ones in East Kilbride and Strathaven showed their best‘jazz hands’ to raise money for charity.

Baby sensory and toddler sense classes are held throughout Lanarkshire.

And recently there have been special classes entitled “Showtime” in aid of charity Tommy’s which funds vital research into miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth.

The sessions saw newborn babies up to tots of four years dressing as Showtime stage stars.

Top hats, sparkly dresses and Elvis outfits all made an appearance.

They were doing their bit as part of the bid to raise £500,000 from baby sensory and toddler sense classes across the country.

The cash will help fund Tommy’s four research centres based in the United Kingdom.

One in four UK parents loses a baby during pregnancy or birth and 60,000 babies are born prematurely each year.

Amanda Findlay, 39, of Lanarkshire and South Glasgow baby sensory and toddler sense, said:“Myself and my colleague come from nursing backgrounds so we understand the importance of evidence-based research and how it can change people’s lives.

“Personally, having worked in gynaecology and early pregnancy for 10 years, I have seen first-hand how devastating pregnancy loss can be.

“Unfortunately, miscarriage, stillbirth and premature births still carry a lot of stigma and many women suffer their loss in private.

“We want to help raise as much funds as possible to support the important work that Tommy’s do and in particular the money raised in Scotland will be going to their Edinburgh Research Centre so helping people local to our classes.”

Tommy’s chief executive Jane Brewin said: “Sensathon is a great way for mums and dads to involve their babies/little ones in a good cause.

“Tommy’s relies on the generosity and hard work of its supporters like baby sensory/toddler sense to continue its pioneering research to prevent pregnancy complications.”

We understand the importance of evidence-based research...
