Bust-up over shop trollies rumbles on

Councillor accuses store over lack of communication

- Nicola Findlay

A row over discarded trollies from an East Ki l br i de s uper market i s rolling on.

SNP East Kilbride South councillor Archie Buchanan previously criticised Morrisons in Lindsayfield for not collecting trol lies which had been taken from the store and dumped in the surrounding areas.

He said his complaints to the store had fallen on deaf ears and as a last-ditch attempt he wrote to the company’s head office in a bid to have the situation resolved but never got a response.

However, the store manager has now said a company has been employed to collect any discarded trollies – and Labour councillor Fiona Dryburgh told the News the store may install magnetic strips in the future to prevent trollies being removed in the first place.

But Councillor Buchanan said he is still extremely disappointed that despite his numerous complaints, he wasn’ t made aware of the developments. He said: “We are now hearing unofficially that the Lindsayfield store intend having a device fitted to trollies to stop then being removed from the vicinity of the store.

“But I would ask why did the head office not indicate this when I wrote to them several weeks ago and why did the local store remain totally silent as well in this matter when I dropped off a copy of the letter to the local store?

“It seems to me that someone is just waffling here. It is extremely disappointing from a company that says it is part of the community to refuse to answer a local authority councillor who has several complaints to deal with.”

But Councillor Dr yburgh has praised the supermarket giant.

She said :“I am pleased that Morris ons are listening to the community and have taken this step.

“They are also looking at the installation of magnetic strips outside the store at some point in the future.

“I would appeal to the public not to discard trollies in our community and I would also appeal to other stores to follow Morrisons’ example.”

Peter Kennedy, Morris ons Lindsayfield manager, said: “We want Morrisons to be at the heart of the community and we are very supportive of community groups, foodbanks, local police and councillors.

“We are aware that the returnable £1 for trollies is very unpopular with customers and we have listened to that.

“We will continue to provide use of the trollies free of charge, but we have employed a company to collect trollies around the area.”
