- Andrea O’Neill

This month marks 70 years of one of the nation’s proudest institutions — the National Health Service.

The vital and extraordinary work our NHS workers do ever y single day to support and take care of us should be applauded and these everyday heroes deserve to be recognised.

We asked East Kilbride shoppers about their positive experiences with the NHS.

Scott Kerr ,40, from Calder wood, said: “I’m diabetic and the fact that I can get all my prescriptions and treatments on the NHS is excellent. Staff at Hairmyres and the Southern General have been brilliant any time I’ve been, even when they are under stress.”

Steven Ballantyne, 24, of West Mains said: Close friends of mine might not be alive today if it wasn’t for the NHS... Steven Ballantyne “Close friends of mine might not be alive today if it wasn’t for the NHS. I’m proud to have an institution like this. If you look at America it’s ridiculously expensive for treatment.”

West Mains man Ali Berry, 47, has lost eight family members to Motor Neurone Disease. He said: “The NHS cared for every one of my family with MND. I saw a really wonderful side of the service keeping them comfortable with palliative care. It’s good to know people are around you who know what they are doing.”

Irene Harvey, 74, of Burnside said: “So many people depend on the NHS, it’s wonderful and something ever yone wants to keep. I think most people would pay more in tax to fund it if needed.”
