Medical practice is at centre of police probe

Allegation of fraud

- Nicola Findlay

An under-threat East Kilbride medical practice is at the centre of a police probe.

Greenhills Medical Practice is being investigated after police were alerted to an alleged fraud relating to discrepancies in the medical centre’s finances.

No arrests have being made but South Lanarkshire Health and Social Care Partnership say they are cooperating with police in their investigation.

The team of GPs who run the practice recently announced they were pulling out due to “unforeseen circumstances”, including GP recruitment and retention.

NHS Lanarkshire are now looking for a new team of GPs to take over with the health board receiving submissions of interest last month.

The current owners are due to leave on October 31.

Linda Findlay, medical director for South Lanarkshire Health and Social Care Partnership, said: “NHS Lanarkshire is aware that Greenhills Medical Practice is cooperating with a Police Scotland investigation.

“We are supporting the partners at the practice during this period.”

A public meeting last month saw concerned patients and local councillors call for reassurances over the future of the practice.

A petition was launched to save the medical centre which has garnered over 1000 signatures.

Officials have said that if new owners can’t be found, the NHS would run the practice and employ GPs and other staff.

A statement on the practice website states: “The partners are all working closely with NHS Lanarkshire to ensure services continue beyond October 2018.”

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that a police investigation is ongoing. No one has been arrested or charged at this stage and enquiries continue.”
