16 COMPETITION It’s time to go wild in great outdoors
Centre shops can help kit you out
There’s no better way to enjoy Scotland’s great outdoors than sleeping under the stars – and East Kilbride’s outdoor specialist Trespass has given us its top tips on what you need to take camping.
●A tent – you don’t need to spend your savings on one but it helps to get the right size to ensure a good night’s sleep. Buy from somewhere with a good range, where you can see them, and don’t be afraid to ask for advice.
Keep warm – temperatures can dip at night so invest in a suitable sleeping bag. You can also get sleeping bag liners to add warmth.
Eat like a king – regardless if you are camping on a site or in the wild, you’ll need to pack a stove, stove gas, pots, plates and utensils. You’ll also need bin bags for rubbish.
●Keep clean – A First Aid kit, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, face cloth, insect repellent and a tick removal kit are essentials.
●Rucksack – you’ll need a sizeable one to carry your gear. Pick wisely, as you’ll be the one having to carry it!
●Clothing – invest in base layers that keep you warm when it gets cold, but are thin enough to stuff into your rucksack when it gets too hot; which is just perfect for the unpredictable Scottish weather!
