Fun tale but no classic

-

Peter Rabbit (PG)

Critics weren’t kind to this take on the classic kids’ character but it’s actually not that bad.

James Corden lends the titular bunny cheeky charm and Domhnall Gleeson butts heads with him in riotous style. The animation mostly works but has the odd shaky moment, and the story doesn’t always respect its source material.

Paddy Considine’s second directorial effort would’ve resonated a lot more if Million Dollar Baby hadn’t come before.

He still has the knack of a powerhouse performance, though, and boxer Matty is as wellrounded a leading man as you’ll see.

Jodie Whittaker is also wonderful as his caring wife.

Steven Soderbergh’s exit from supposed retirement continues with this tight, tense thriller shot entirely on iPhones.

This shooting style isn’t simply a gimmick for the marketing department to utilise as it works really well within the perimeters of a story full of claustrophobic mistrust.

While wowing audiences on TV’s The Crown, Claire Foy finally proves she belongs on the big screen following duds like Season of the Witch and Vampire Academy.

Foy is poked, prodded, terrorised and leered upon but rises to the challenge; it will be very interesting to see what she does with the Lisbeth Salander role in next year’s The Girl in the Spider’s Web.
