Do we need fresh vote to settle Brexit row?

News readers have their say on big issue

- Nicola Findlay

As Brexit negotiations continue to stutter amid resignations – including the one of foreign secretary and leading Leaver Boris Johnson – there are calls for a People’s Vote if no deal is reached.

The UK is due to leave the EU on Friday, March 29, 2019 with a 21-month transition period to prepare for the moment when the new post-Brexit rules between the UK and the EU begin.

However, many are none the wiser on what will actually happen when the UK leaves the EU and crucial issues are still to be resolved.

The News spoke to folk in East Kilbride town centre and asked whether there should be a fresh referendum if no deal can be reached.

Nicki Esslemont, who was with son Kadhem, from Eaglesham said: “I think there should be another vote – especially if there is no deal. People had no idea what they were voting for.”

Meanwhile, Iain Miller from The Murray said: “I voted to stay in and if no deal can be reached there has to be another referendum and it should be brought back to the people.”

But John Lang from Whitehills said: “There shouldn’t be another vote. The decision was made and we need to make it work.”

And East Kilbride shopper Ryan Dickson said: “I voted to stay in but the decision has been taken. The politicians need to get on with it. I don’t think those who wanted to leave will have changed their minds and it could drag on and on.”
