Thieves steal road roller

Appeal for info

- Nicola Findlay

Council chiefs are asking for the public’s help to track down a brazen thief who nicked plant equipment worth £20,000 from the side of a road in East Kilbride.

The local authority has urged anyone who may have information about the theft of the road roller from the junction of Westwoodhill and Lickprivick Road in Greenhills between 6pm on Wednesday, July 18 and 7am the following day to contact police in the town.

The road roller was being used as part of resurfacing work on Westwood Hill which was due to be completed by Sunday, July 22.

Drivers in the town have been faced with roads chaos in the last few works due to a number of scheduled projects over the school summer holidays.

The various resurfacing projects are part of South Lanarkshire Council’s £126 million roads investment programme and there have been a number of lane closures as well as road closures.

South Lanarkshire Council’s head of roads and transportation Gordon Mackay said: “I can confirm that the team carrying out work in the Westwood Hill area discovered a road roller was missing from the site on the morning of Thursday, July 19 .

“They reported this to the police and took action to ensure the carriageway resurfacing could continue and be completed to schedule.

“I would ask that anyone who has information about the missing plant or who may have seen suspicious activity at the junction of Westwoodhill and Lickprivick Road during the evening on Wednesday or overnight to Thursday morning to contact the police.”
