Folk duo set for return

-

A folk duo who enjoyed a massive following in East Kilbride in their 1980s heyday are set to return to the town this month.

Brothers Fraser and Ian Bruce, along with accordion player Gregor Lowrey, are set to bring their show, ‘Auld HatNew Heids’, to East Kilbride Arts Centre on Saturday, August 11.

Vocalist Fraser lived in various areas of the town for many years – and is now looking forward to coming back with his latest show.

He told the News: “Our style was based on new songs written in a traditional style, generally with a strong chorus and presented in a fun and humorous manner. We were more ‘entertainers’ as opposed to outright traditional singers.

“Between 1980 and 1985 we released three albums and appeared at festivals and folk clubs in many countries. I lived in East Kilbride at the time and my two eldest attended Duncanrig Secondary.

“In 1985, I gave up singing to concentrate on running a specialist construction repair company.

“Ian, however, kept going and created a hugely successful solo career as a writer and singer. Recently, Ian released his 22nd album and has top-lined at over 70 major festivals throughout the world and still works as a solo artist.

“Then, in 2014, I handed over the business to my two oldest sons and returned to singing as a solo artist.”

Fraser added: “I decided to put together a show that replicated those early days of the folk clubs with fun, laughter and audiences singing along.

“We have had sellout concerts at Celtic Connections and the Edinburgh Fringe. We hope that many of our ‘old’ fans turn up for a nostalgic night plus many younger fans to see just what they missed.”
