A sparkling celebration

- Colin Paterson

It was a diamond occasion for an East Kilbride couple who have celebrated 60 years of marriage.

Bill and Thelma Kerr received a visit from South Lanarkshire provost Ian McAllan after reaching the landmark on July 16.

The pair met at Crossmyloof ice rink in 1957. Thelma lived in the Todhills North area of The Murray after her family moved from the village of Carmunnock as her dad worked as a draughtsman with Rolls-Royce.

Meanwhile, Bill lived in Eaglesham with his parents James and Catherine.

The couple married and set up home in a flat in Sommerville Terrace – and when their children Pauline and Jackson arrived, they moved into a house in The Murray where they still live today.

They are now the proud grandparents of five grandsons – Craig, Murray, Mitchell, Lewis and Rhuaridh.

Bill worked as a joiner then in the tax office for a number of years and Thelma worked in the office of Schweppes until they both retired.

Thelma is a regular at the local Tai Chi clubs while Bill is an active member of the East Kilbride Men’s Shed group.

They both love visiting car boot sales and having afternoon tea at locations throughout the Clyde Valley.

And after 60 happy years, they still thoroughly enjoy the time they spend together.

Provost McAllan said: “It was a tremendous honour to meet Bill and Thelma and to be part of such a special celebration. Congratulations to them both.”

The couple were presented with flowers and whisky by the provost, on behalf of South Lanarkshire Council.
