Coach: ‘If Nicole keeps improving.. the sky’s the limit’

- Paul Thomson

An East Kilbride Figure Skating coach reckons the sky is the limit for one of her students after claiming seven titles in her first year on the ice.

Silvanna Cameron, who, with her sister Yvonne, has coached youngsters to compete at world and Olympic level, has been bowled over by the display of eight-year-old Nicole Brolly.

And she has praised the St Leonards youngster’s work ethic, following a number of podium places at events across the UK.

Nicole’s first competition was in April last year when she struck gold on her debut, winning the Blackpool Ice Skating Festival at her age group.

Since then, she has competed in 13 competitions all over Britain from Dundee, Edinburgh and Aberdeen to London, Guildford, Coventry, Nottingham and even Deeside in Wales.

In these events she has been able to win a place on the podium a total of 10 times, taking seven first place trophies, two second places and one third place.

The Carmunnock Primary School pupil has also competed in the NISA (National Ice Skating Association) Young Stars competition, in which young talent is spotted.

She was awarded the judges’ skater of the day and gained first place with an impressive score of 20.23, with the highest technical score overall.

Silvanna said: “Nicole is such a hard working pupil, I never need to remind her to practice.

“If she can’t get a certain move, she will practice it until she can, as she is determined to improve all the time, and progress with her skating.

“At the moment she is awaiting her Level Two field moves test.

“If Nicole keeps on improving the way she has, the sky’s the limit.”

Nicole started at EKIFSC just before her fifth birthday and now trains over 10 hours a week in her pursuit of more success.

Proud mum Fiona told the News: “Nicole just lives for her ice skating and as a family we cannot remember life without it.

“She is incredibly dedicated to her skating and practices so hard each and every training session.

“Nicole loves competing and has now passed her Level One field moves.

“She gained the technical score to move up to Level One in competitions and can’t wait now to start competing at the next level with her new programme, entitled Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!”
