Jags mark anniversary by raising awareness of prostate cancer
East Kilbride Thistle used their 50th anniversary celebrations to raise awareness of prostate cancer on Sunday.
The Jags, founded in 1968, joined forces with Dukla Pumpherston and the sides – packed with a host of familiar faces from Scottish football and entertainment – played out a thrilling 3-3 draw in their charity match at the Showpark.
Thistle’s 1983 Junior Cup winning hero Joe Reilly pulled his boots on again for the hosts and he was joined by Aberdeen legend and EK native Robbie Winters, among a strong Jags team that also included ex-Dundee United striker Andy McLaren.
Current Jags boss Alan Paterson also got a run out alongside his coaching team Billy Dolan and ex-Thistle striker Steven ‘Dunga’ McClung.
Former Showpark favourite Tommy Sheridan lined up for Dukla alongside Raith Rovers legend Ally Graham and radio DJ Des Clarke.
It proved to be an entertaining match with Dukla coming from 2-0 down to lead 3-2, before the Jags netted a late penalty through Paul McAneny to equalise.
Tam McDonald and Martin McLachlan were also on the scoresheet for the Jags, with Dukla’s Stewart Maxwell netting a brace and Stevie Murray also on target for the visitors.
Jags director Peter Kelsall said: “It was a good day and everyone enjoyed it. We were treated to a lot of goals and it was great to support such a good cause.”
A total of £100 was raised on the day and the Jags hope to double that with their own contribution.
