VOICE OF THE PEOPLE Anxious exam results wait is over for pupils

Are top marks the be-all and end-all?

- Nicola Findlay

The anxious wait was over for pupils across East Kilbride and Avondale last week when exam results arrived.

South Lanarkshire Council say senior pupils are achieving more qualifications than ever.

The News spoke to folk in East Kilbride town centre about what they enjoyed at school and whether there is too much pressure placed on young people today.

Anthony Snow from Chapelton said: “I always enjoyed the sciences but exams are not the be-all and end-all. I also think practical skills as well as academic skills should be taken into consideration.”

Meanwhile, Andrew Jack from Westwood said: “I think there is more pressure now to do well in exams but there are folk who leave school without many formal qualifications who can do better, have a better job than someone with loads of qualifications.”

Mhairi Hopkins from Calderwood said: “I think it’s tough for young people because they might have the academic qualifications but don’t have the experience and I think apprenticeships are all but gone.

“I think the pressure on kids comes from a number of directions. It can be parents or the schools, who I believe hand out too much work to do out of school hours.”

Meanwhile, daughter Sara said:“I am still in second year so I don’t have too much pressure. I enjoy school and really like home economics.”
