EDUCATION Delight as it’s top marks for pupils

Students celebrate exam results

- Nicola Findlay

Pupils across East Kilbride and Avondale celebrated as the anxious wait for exam results was over.

Students’ hard work and dedication paid off and head teachers said more pupils than ever were securing positive results in National 4, National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher exams with pass rates improving.

There were celebrations at St Andrew’s and St Bride’s High in East Kilbride with some pupils keeping it in the family.

S4 twins Katie and Niall McEntagart picked up 15 A-grade passes in their National 5 results.

While two sets of brother-and-sister teams – Joseph and Jessica Hagan and Thomas and Eleanor Service – secured a total of 25 A-grade passes between them at National 5 and Higher level.

Head teacher Fiona Mullen said: “Another great set of results for all the pupils in St Andrew’s and St Bride’s and I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate them.

“This is a tremendous achievement and testament to the hard work and commitment of our students, the constant help and encouragement of parents and carers as well as the professionalism and dedication of staff not only in St Andrew’s and St Bride’s High School but across the whole learning community.”

Meanwhile, Calderglen High has reported its best ever S4 N5 results with record numbers of pupils presented at N5 and high-quality passes.

Head teacher Liz White said: “We’re pleased to report very positive SQA results and wish to thank staff and pupils for all their hard work and commitment day in and day out.

“We also wish to recognise the support from our parents as we could not deliver such positive results for individuals without their backing.”

There was also family success at Strathaven Academy with 15-year-old twins Hamish and Hannah Anderson securing five A-grade Highers each.

Tony McDaid, South Lanarkshire Council’s executive director of education, said: “The results show that young people in South Lanarkshire, by the time they leave S6, are achieving better qualifications than ever.

“Exam results are important but they need to be considered in the context of the development of a range of skills and competencies as these are also important factors in enabling young people to enter the world of work or to move into further or higher education.

“While the majority will receive the grades they were hoping for, we should also remember that even if there has been some disappointment, there is always support and guidance on hand to help everyone build on their achievements in a positive way.”
