Council crackdown on mixing recycling
What do you think of ‘red tag’system?
South Lanarkshire Council will introduce a ‘red tag’ system in a bid to cut down on the amount of contaminated kerbside recycling they are paying to send to landfill.
A report , which went before SLC’s community enterprise and resources committee, revealed that the local authority spent £91,000 in just three months redirecting rubbish which could have been recycled if not contaminated.
Now a tag will be placed on bins meaning they will be left unemptied until the next cycle – four weeks later.
The News spoke to folk in East Kilbride town centre to see what they thought.
East Kilbride shopper Alexandra Oleksik said: I think this is a heavy-handed move by the council. I think this is over the top Catherine McElwee “I think it’s good to recycle as much as possible and it might make people more careful.”
Stefan Smyth from Jackton said: “It’s a pain if your bin isn’t lifted and I think the council’s communication could be much better – maybe send a letter out to people about it?”
But Robert Izat from The Murray said: “I think this should be done as recycling is important and when the recycling bins were given out it said on them what should go in each bin.”
However, Catherine McElwee from West Mains said: “I think this is a heavy-handed move by the council.
“I know recycling is important but I think this is over the top. I think they should maybe update people on what goes where first.”
