Parking problem proposal
Consultation launch
A consultation will be launched by South Lanarkshire Council into introducing residents’ parking permit zones (RPPZ) in streets near Hairmyres train station.
It forms part of a wider review of permit zones within the local authority due to increasing demand for parking.
Proposals to gauge local residents’ views on introducing permit zones in the Hairmyres area were approved at a meeting of the community and enterprise resources committee.
Residents near Hairmyres train station and the hospital have long complained about commuters parking on nearby streets.
And a report stated: “In East Kilbride, close to Hairmyres station, the issues are mainly caused by rail commuters, however, some visitors to the hospital contribute to the problem. Residents have been complaining for several years that they cannot access or egress their driveways, or park on-street close to their homes and that the situation is getting worse year on year.”
Officers say the consultation will be the first step in reviewing the need for a RPPZ and the “geographical” extent of any Traffic Regulation Order (TRO).
The council also want to examine the administrative burden in managing permits and the potential displacement of indiscriminate parking issues to the boundary of any new zone.
It is thought the consultation will take up to six months.
There are already residents’ parking zones in East Kilbride and the Village but in 2011 it was agreed that the zones were significantly reduced in size.
