Jail terms for knife threat pair

- Court reporter

A man and a youth have each been locked up for two years after an East Kilbride shopper was threatened with a knife.

Sean Gallacher and the 17-year-old, who cannot legally be named, robbed a man of a bottle of fruit juice, Hamilton Sheriff Court heard.

Gallacher, 29, a prisoner, and the teenager admitted assaulting and robbing the 37-year-old in Westwood Square on April 8. Callum Forsyth, prosecuting, said the victim left a Spar shop and was then approached by Gallacher, who was under the influence.

The man was asked if he would buy alcohol for him, but refused with Gallacher becoming aggressive.

The teenager, who had been standing nearby, joined Gallacher and the victim tried to walk away. However, Gallacher said he would stab him and the youth took a blade from the back of his trousers and challenged him.

Gallacher grabbed a bottle of juice from the man’s jacket. The victim managed to make his way to the nearby Tesco store and the police were contacted.

A few minutes later, Gallacher’s teenage accomplice was challenged by assistants at Tesco as he filled a basket with alcohol and tried to take it away without paying.

He pulled out a knife again. One of the assistants asked him:“Are you really going to stab me over some wine?”

The teenager admitted stealing alcohol, brandishing a knife and making threats, headbutting a police officer later and breaking a bail curfew. A West Mains man who admitted assaulting two women was put under supervision for 18 months when he appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court.

William Ward, 43, of Springbank Park, grabbed one woman by the hair and punched her repeatedly on the head before punching another on the head.

The attacks happened at Springbank Park on July 24. Ward also admitted breaching a bail order. Sheriff David Bicket ordered him to get alcohol counselling and carry out 180 hours of unpaid community work.
