Fight to end child poverty

Open workshop event

- Nicola Findlay

A workshop is being organised next month in a bid to tackle child poverty in East Kilbride.

Following on from June’s successful event in the town, with Darren McGarvey and The Poverty Alliance talking about child poverty, organisers are planning an open workshop.

It will take place on Thursday, September 6 in The Murray’s United Reformed Church.

And it aims to take forward joint action to address child poverty across the town.

The event, which will run from 7.30pm and is open to all, includes the wide range of local groups who are already working to address poverty in East Kilbride and interested individuals who are willing to help.

Event organisers Kirsten Robb and Iain Hughes told the News they hope they can come up with solutions in a bid to take steps forward in the battle to eradicate child poverty.

“Child poverty is expected to rise to 37 per cent by 2022 but local action can play a huge part in tackling the issue,” the duo said this week.

“Challenge Poverty Week in the first week in October will raise awareness of poverty, celebrate the good work that is already done and show that it is solvable.

“This event in September will plan action together for the week as well as looking towards what we can do in the future to create an even bigger impact on child poverty.”

If you have an idea of what could be done but are unable to attend, email Kirsten and she will share suggestions at the meeting.
